Glencar Escarpment & the Glencarbury Mines
Hike the Glencar Escarpment and experience incredible views over the picturesque glacial valley of Glencar, home to the famous Glencar Waterfall and the more recently noted Devils Chimney Waterfall.
Located in north Sligo, Benbulben is known as Irelands table mountain and is one of the most photographed mountains in the country.
This approximately 320 million year old mountain is full of breath-taking views, stunning landscapes and also boasts a wide variety of wildlife. It also hosts a unique variety of plants, possessing three species of arctic alpine plants that can not be found anywhere else in Ireland due to the mountains height and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean which provides unique atmospheric conditions for these plants to thrive.
The mountain is also rich in mythological folklore and human history. The famed band of mythological warriors known as the Fianna used this range to hunt and train and is also linked with the epic Fianna love story of Diarmuid & Grainne. Human history of the range spans from tales of civil war dispair to the century long enterprising efforts of mining companies to extract the mountains riches, world war era plane crashes, peat harvesting and the more modern day use of the range as a recreational location.
Along your way our guiding team will explain all of these interreges in a causal fun basis bringing your hike to life and leaving you with a lasting memory of your visit to this table top wonder.
